Creative Futures: Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity! (Applications and Interviews- Glen Bertram BBC)

Glen Bertram's lecture was very informative and it was interesting to hear about hsi background working for the BBC.
Bertram's advice was clear and succinct and focused on many key areas including the jobhunting and application processes, preparing an organised CV and interview technique. He also discussed the BBC's move to Salford.

Summary of key points:
CV:
  • CV- Prepare your CV in advance to avoid last-minute panic. CVs should be tailored to suit the exact job for which you are applying, but the fundamental elements such as exam results, dates of employment, NI number etc will remain unchanged but are essential to get right!
  • When describing why you are suitable for a certain position, use language which elaborates on standard answers and protrays your experience and suitability in the best possible light without lying...Explain what your previous job/experience taught you rather than simply what the role entailed in terms of duties. Phrases such as '......as a consequence of my experience with ..........I am now better prepared for............' are more impressive than a straightforward description of the role itself.
  • Avoid negativity- don't say whatyou don't have or can't offer to the company! Avoid phrases such as 'Although I lack experience in......I am very..........' which focus on the negative.
  • Bertram cites the part of the CV which details the applicant's suitability for the job as the most important part of the application form, above anything else such as education or previous experience. It is here where applicants can impress.
  • CVs are best kept succinct and strictly tailored to the position advertised. Edit and tailor your CV and take out parts which are irrelevant to the job for which you're applying.
  • Printing your CV on brightly coloured paper will not mean it is any more likely to be read first or better remembered!
Interviews:
  • Self-presentation is highly important. Looking scruffy and unkempt is unlikely to result in a successful interview!
  • Preparation prior to the interview is vital. This includes researching the company thoroughly and preparing answers to likely questions. Practicing answers in front of a mirror may help with body language, delivery and posture.
  • Body language is important- address the whole panel, not just the person who posed the question. Smiles and a firm handshake are also helpful!
  • When discussing any previous jobs, speak so that your role sounds pivotal, without lying or exaggerating. This can be achieved by speaking confidently and believing in your answer.
  • Be succint but say enough to cover all important areas.
  • Confidence is key
  • Appear keen to work as part of a team.
  • Water! If offered a glass of water it is advisable to accept it, as pausing for a few seconds to sip from a glass allows a little extra thinking time and will help to calm you down if you're feeling anxious.
