‘6 Years Out! (Illustration and design)
Joe List
Joe List is a Glyndwr University graduate, who is now works in graphic design. Since leaving university six years ago, List has worked for a variety of companies, including management consultancy firms and Hilton Hotels. He has also worked on freelance illustration projects post-university.
List’s work has a very distinctive style, which is quirky and contemporary. Amongst other work, List works on a project each week involving the Guardian Magazine, called The Annotated Weekender. List adds to photographs in the magazine by drawing characters, objects or maybe simply text, to completely alter the meaning of the images. Humorous and quirky, this simple idea keeps ideas fresh and exciting. His work is impressive and it was inspiring to hear from a Glyndwr graduate, as it made success seem within closer reach!
Key Points:
Stylise:  Trying to make things look too realistic is very hard and is easy to get wrong. Done badly, it looks terrible. Stylised work is more forgiving and unusual.
Don’t lose the charm: Keep things fresh and raw- over thinking can be counter-productive.
Keep trying!: Competitions/collaborations/Invent projects/Keep sketchbooks…..Keep working!
Don’t work for free!
Don’t hide your work!
Make the most of social networking sites
Create a brand
Get a website which sounds and looks professional
Develop own style
Consider ways of presenting work.
Overall, the lecture was quite informative, although I was unimpressed by the style of presentation, which seemed a bit ‘slapdash’, but this may just be a means of expressing a creative, quirky personality and is not a criticism!
