Mad Tea-Party ideas
As agreed at our last meeting I have carried out a little research into the mad tea-party featured in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and compiled the following for us to use to plan our event.
Background to story and characters
The link below takes you to a website which summarises the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. We are planning (at present) to base our day around Chapter Seven ‘A Mad Tea-Party’ – using the content of the chapter to inspire a quiz / trail in which the answers can be found in and around the shops within Brunner Court Square.

Dressing ourselves and the square in ‘A Mad Tea-Party’ style!
Within this chapter there are 4 main characters:
Alice
March Hare
Hatter
Dormouse
While I think we had originally envisaged dressing up as these characters (which we still could) given that the whole book is about a fantasy world of the unexpected I am sure costumes and dress would be dramatic enough if they were just very bright, we could wear mad hats, dye our hair? We could invite visitors to dress for our mad tea-party too? People would not need to dress as animals unless they wanted to!
We could ‘dress’ the square / Library with village fete style bunting, brightly coloured ribbons, paper flowers, plants, table clothes, larger / smaller than life tea party accessories, plates tea pots etc (cardboard cut outs?).
Trail clues / answers
At present I imagine that the visitors will be able to find all the relevant clues / answers to the questions at a range of locations around the square. Inspired by the following quote from the book and to provide continuity around the square I thought it might be good to write all the clues / answers on large parcel tags tied (to various places / within shops) with brightly coloured ribbons / bunting. “...she found a little bottle on it ......... and round its neck a paper label, with the words ‘DRINK ME’ beautifully printed on it in large letters.”
Alternatively if some shop owners were happy to they could dress up and answer questions as part of the quiz? We would obviously need to speak to people before we could do this!
Art work for quiz / trail leaflets and resources in shops
I have a friend who works at Chester Library who is currently at University studying children’s illustrating. I am happy to approach her to see if she could provide us with some sketches to use in our materials (given that I guess we will not be able to use the pictures from the books given copyright laws).
On the following page I have roughly laid out an initial plan of possible quiz / trail questions.
It would be great if people could make suggestions / improvements so we can make this trail as innovative / exciting as possible, making good use of the space involved. The suggestions can be discussed at the next meeting or can be emailed to me direct at amylouiseamy@aol.com where I can collate them ready to discuss at the next meeting.
I have a copy of the book, of Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland DVD and a few other things which I will bring to the next meeting and anyone is welcome to borrow them (though of course you can also borrow these from the Library!).
These are only suggestions / ideas that I have had after looking at the book. We may need to scale this down a lot given our time frame and resources but I hope it will provide us with something to base our next steps around.
I hope this all makes sense!
Many thanks

A Mad Tea-Party Quiz
Based on and inspired by the work of Lewis Carroll in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Today, the Friends of Northwich Library are hosting an Alice in Wonderland inspired mad tea-party! Can you answer our mad questions and win one of our mad prizes? Travel in and around the shops in Brunner Court looking out for coloured tags to find the answers!
Possible questions (they might be better phrased ‘ Look in Connexions: What did the March Hare .....? etc – any other suggestions?)
1. What did the Cheshire cat leave behind? (answer ‘a grin’ – hang grins from the tree in Brunner Court)
2. At what time has time stood still? 6pm (clock with time stood still)
3. How much did the Hatter’s hat cost? (Ten and six, 10 shillings and 6 pennies, label stuck in the Hatters hat?)
4. Ask the Hatter in the Library (example) what he had to sing to the Queen of Hearts. (Twinke, twinkle, little bat! How I wonder what you’re at!)
5. What riddle did the Hatter ask Alice? (Why is a raven like a writing-desk?)
6. Can you write your own nonsense riddle which has no answer?
7. What did the March Hare dip into his cup of tea? (a watch)
8. What were the names of the three little sisters in the Dormouse’s story? (Elsie, Lacie and Tillie)
9. In what unusual place did the three little sisters (from the Dormouse’s story) live? (at the bottom of a well)
10. What did the Hatter tell Alice she should cut? (her hair)
